My character is a mage and his two professions are: tailoring(making gear out of cloth), and enchanting(creating the ability to make enchantments). Are these good professions for a mage, or should I forget them and learn any other ones? Any suggestions on what are some good professions for a mage? Oh, and is there any way to learn more than 2 professions at once?
My first mage was skinning and leather, used to support my first guild. They in turn supported me with clothing, enchants, and other things I needed as a mage. Leather and skinning was a good money maker, but do not recommend taking a profession to support a guild that will not directly support you.
My second mage was cloth and enchant. The green/blue cloth patterns I would disenchant for mats, and this worked out well, though in this aspect not a good money maker. The cloth/taylor is an excellent choice for any cloth wearer due to the bind on pickup epic patterns at high level.
My third mage was jewelcraft and mining. This was a great money maker, but didn’t provide a whole lot for my mage other than some nice jewelry at low levels. At lower levels, most jewelry seems to add very little. At higher levels, the gem cutting, trinkets (bop), and some jewelry are very nice to have.
Amongst all my toons, I have taken up all the professions. If you are looking for something both useful to you as a mage and something you can fairly well survive on, I would recommend cloth/taylor and mining. Mining is one of the most versatile gathering skills, as it is used for blacksmithing, engineering, and jewelcrafting. Taylor gives you the ability to make your own gear, and in the excess of gear you can also sell. The nice thing about cloth is there is no secondary prerequisite for it since the mats are common mob drops.
Tailoring and echanting is what i choose for my mage. So they should be good. Also you can only learn 2 at a time.
You can only do two main professions such as tailoring and enchanting (which are great for a mage) but you can always do cooking, first aid, and fishing. Since you have already chose tailoring and enchanting I would stick with that but other options are alchemy and herbalism. If you don’t want to craft but want to make money, do skinning and herbalism. These pay off in the AH in a big way.
I recommend tailoring and first aid, because u can make your own armour and the armour (cloth) is so weak the you will need first aid to heal your self faster.
Ryan, first aid is a secondary skill,
and my warlock has mining and engineering, maybe tailoring and enchanting is kinda good ofr a mage
My Mage has mining and engineering
the stuff I make helps him stay alive
1.
tailoring – can make epic set at 70. and shard stuff you make for enchanting.
enchanting – pretty easy to level with tailoring… buuuut… it sucks to get shards unless you level with friends who will let you keep shards from stuff you de in instance.. in PUGS people are selfish and wont let the enchanter keep the shards for enchanting.. but then go ahead and keep the stuff they mine/skin/herb. totally no fair!
2.
engineering – makes some nice epic goggles that you can make at 62. and you can make your own flying and epic flying mounts.
mining – to help with engineering.
3.
jewelcrafting – makes cool trinkets and ring and stuff.. patterns are VERY expensive but you can make the money back easy with cutting and selling epic gems.
mining – to help with jewelcrafting.
4.
alchemy – can make helpful potions and elixirs and flasks. awesome.
herbalism – to help with alchemy.

you don’t need to take enchanting with tailoring. you can take either with any gathering profession [herbalism, mining, skinning]…….. it is recommended, however, that you take the gathering profession that fuels your crafting profession unless you have enough gold to cover the expense or another char that has the profession that can cover it.

i personally chose tailoring and enchanting on my mage and i love them. enchanting gets a little annoying though at around 250 – 300 because no one runs strat or scholo and it’s just hard to get enough mats.

you can’t have more than two professions unless they’re secondary professions which are cooking, first aid, and fishing. first aid is awesome for a mage since you can’t heal yourself.
My Mage is a Tailor and an Enchanter (Artisan Tailor/Expert Enchanter) and they are by far the best professions a Mage can have. You may also like Mining and Engineering because you can make many very nice Goggles which are Cloth and a ton of useful trinkets. You can only have 2 professions, unfortunately, but the two you have are very good. And, as a side note, if you are just starting your professions, you can make many things in Apprentice Tailoring that can be disenchanted with Enchanting to make mats for Enchanting, increasing both skills at once.
My mage has tailoring. which is a must for any mage i did have enchanting too. so i think you’d be on the right track
